Frenulum breve or a short frenulum as it is known is a condition where the frenulum of the penis is too short. The frenulum is a band of tissue beneath the glans of the penis that is elastic and connects to the foreskin. The frenulum helps the foreskin to contract over the glans, however, in some cases it is too short and tight and so, it can cause restricted movement and pain in some men.

This can cause pain and problems when it comes to sexual intercourse but the problem can be rectified with a simple procedure known as a Frenuloplasty.

The Frenuloplasty Procedure

Frenuloplasty is a simple procedure that is often carried out under local anaesthetic. However, there are some cases where it can be carried out under general anaesthetic. For those who undergo the procedure, then the surgeon will lengthen the frenulum thus removing the restriction helping to increase the range of movement in the skin.

It is a relatively minor procedure that takes around 20 minutes with the aim of the procedure enabling the individual to have an erection without any pain or bleeding.

Following the Procedure

Following a frenuloplasty, it is normal for some patients to experience some bleeding as well as swelling and discomfort. In some cases, patients may be given absorbable stitches to keep the wound closed while dressing is applied which can then be removed after 24 hours. After the dressing has been removed, the area can be washed using soap and water. The stitches will dissolve after 7-10 days although a small amount of bruising and swelling may still exist.

The soreness can remain for a week or more but around two weeks after the procedure, it is common for patients to return to their regular level of activity. Driving is prohibited until patients can carry out an emergency stop without any pain. Sexual activity can be resumed around two to three weeks after the procedure but more importantly when the wound is pain-free and comfortable.
