What is a male fertility expert?

A male fertility expert is also called a Consultant Andrologist and is a consultant who specialises in male factor infertility. They are experts in the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting male fertility.

Why see a male fertility expert?

Male factor infertility affects 50% of couples experiencing fertility issues. Sperm counts are falling and male fertility problems are on the rise and most men don't know that there is an issue with their fertility until they come to try to conceive. When you see an expert in men's fertility they will help you understand your fertility status currently, your fertility potential, how to maintain sexual health and will discuss any issues surrounding sexual dysfunction such as erectile dysfunction or ejaculatory disorders.

What happens when you see a male fertility expert?

Initially your male fertility expert or consultant andrological surgeon may suggest a semen analysis. A semen analysis is a quick, non-invasive test to assess male fertility. The test assesses sperm in the ejaculate. A semen analysis will assess the following:

  • Motility: how well the sperm moves
  • Concentration: the number of sperm per 1 ml - sperm count
  • Morphology: what the sperm looks like
  • pH: to assess if the sample is too alkaline or too acidic

Other tests which may be suggested by your male fertility expert include:

  • DNA fragmentation test: to look at the sperm at a genetic level
  • Genetic blood test
  • Hormone blood test
  • Semen culture: to assess for infection

Together, these tests give a full picture of the fertility status of the patient.

What happens next?

If your semen analysis or one of the other tests comes back as abnormal there is lots that can be done. Our specialists can help you to take the right steps in optimising your fertility and ultimately the chance of a successful pregnancy with your partner.

What are the causes of abnormal male fertility tests?

Male factor infertility can be linked to a number of different but is usually caused by an underlying medical condition, which once addressed and treated can often have a huge, positive impact on fertility. These can include:

  • Varicocele
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Infection
  • Azoospermia
