The penis can be affected by a number of issues that cause mental and physical problems in men. Disease, accidents, and previous surgeries can all cause issues that affect the penis. Issues can cause pain in the penis in which reconstructive surgery can address. In addition, due to operations such as circumcisions, men can be self-conscious about their penises. A penile reconstruction operation aims to fix the issues a man has with his penis.

The most common penile reconstruction procedure is to correct a peyronie's deformity.

It is a complex surgery that can require multiple procedures.

One of the main benefits of penile reconstruction is relief from physical and emotional challenges. Results include a natural-looking penis that may be capable of erections.

If penile reconstruction is right for you, we will work with you to understand your options.

Patients will meet with their doctors prior to the procedure to confirm they are candidates for the operation.

Doctors will review a patient’s medical history prior to the surgery. They will also exam the patient to determine if they are healthy and fit to undergo the procedure. Patients will need to be made aware of the risks and complications a penile reconstruction involves.

In addition, some doctors may have their patients undergo a psychiatric evaluation prior to the operation.

During the procedure patients will be given an antibiotic drip to help the prevention of infection. Depending on the area of the penis and the damage, operations can differ.

Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans or Lichen Sclerosis can occur in some cases. These conditions can cause the skin on the head of the penis to become scarred. The skin can be removed during surgery and a skin graft can be put in its place.

Previous surgeries can also cause scarring and swelling in the penis. Radiotherapy treatments for patients who have suffered from cancer can also seek penile reconstruction. The penis can be reconstructed to look more cosmetically pleasing to the eye.

Patients will most likely experience bruising, swelling, discomfort, and numbness following a penile reconstruction surgery. The area operated on will be bandaged to prevent infection. Patients will be given detailed instructions on how to care for their wounds.

Men will need to avoid sexual intercourse for up to six weeks. Physical contact during sex could undo the surgery or cause unwanted healing and scarring of the penis.

The penis and scrotum may be bruised for a few weeks following the surgery. Men will need to monitor the area for infection, although the possibility for infection is low.
