WOMEN'S HUB

Sex is a topic that many people talk openly about — but very few want to acknowledge if it becomes a problem.

Sexual problems can affect anyone, at any time, regardless of age, sexual preferences, or experiences.

Sexual problems are more common than we may realise. What’s important is recognising when we encounter an issue that we need to talk, find out more, or seek support with.

Infertility in men is most often due to too few sperm, poor sperm quality or sperm that do not move properly. Men can have problems ejaculating, which makes it difficult to have sex and to father a child through sexual intercourse.

Men still feel male fertility is a taboo subject - London Andrology

Here are some benefits of attending a consultation with your partner:

  • During a consultation a large amount of information is covered. Your partner can help you retain additional details that you may have missed. They can also remind you of questions that you want to ask a surgeon during the consultation but may forget in the moment.
  • Involving your partner can help you make a more confident decision about your desired changes.
  • Bringing your partner to your pre-operative surgical appointment can help set you up for a smoother recovery.
  • The presence of your partner can help make an appointment a relaxed experience rather than an overwhelming one.
  • Meeting your surgeon together is the best way for a partner to address any hesitations so they can be fully supportive of your decision.

DISCUSSING THE ISSUE

Sexual problems or sexual dysfunctions are something that couples encounter at one point or another. Types of sexual problems in men include:

  • Low libido and erectile dysfunction
  • Delayed ejaculation
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Infertility

When approaching your spouse about sexual problems in the relationship, you should avoid having this conversation in the bedroom where you both exposed and vulnerable. Instead, find some neutral territory where you can be alone, private, and undisturbed. Make every effort to express yourself sensitivity and without any suggestion of blame.

It is important to remember that solving any sexual relationship problem is a process and not an event. Take your time, be patient, and, if needed, seek help from a professional to ensure both your self-esteem and confidence remain intact.

MALE INFERTILITY

Causes of male infertility can be hard to diagnose. The problems are most often with sperm production or delivery. Diagnosis starts with a full history and physical exam. We may also want to do blood work and semen tests.

Treatment depends on what's causing male infertility. Many problems can be fixed with drugs or surgery. This would allow conception through normal sex.

The treatments below are broken into 3 areas:

  1. Non-surgical therapy for male infertility
  2. Surgical therapy for male infertility
  3. Treatment for unknown causes of male infertility

Most male fertility issues can be treated without surgery and it is important to note that infertility is not your or your partner's fault, the problem can be caused by a combination of reasons. If you find that either of you are becoming stressed because you haven’t conceived yet, then we recommend making an appointment sooner.

NEXT STEPS

Andrology is the branch of urology concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions specific to male fertility and the genital tract. There are many ways that London Andrology can help you and your partner if any of the sexual problems listed on this page cause issues in your relationship.

You and your partner might feel nervous or shy about talking to your doctor about your sexual problems. But opening up about your concerns is the first step to getting help. We have a team of specialists available to you to discuss how we can help.

During the appointment, we will ask questions about what is happening. We may do a physical exam and order other tests (such as a blood test) to figure out whether an underlying health concern is the cause of the sexual difficulties.

Some men prefer to attend appointments on their own as this aids a more open discussion with the focus on themselves. Some men may also feel more comfortable to discuss their past sexual health and history without their partner present.
